This is a Cab-lover's Merlot. Aromas of deep, dark cherries, strong herbs including notes of burning sage and earthy mineral tones. Black licorice, wood spice, sweet leather all follow through. Smooth, easy entry with red cherry flavors that lingers through mocha-coverd tannins that are approachable for all red wine lovers. Gentle yet hearty enough to linger rich, earthy nuances and mixed, wild berries. A great example of what great Merlot can be.
All of the fruit for the 2002 Hengehold Family Merlot came from James Creek Vineyard located in the southern Sonoma Valley. Both its soils and climate are great for this variety. “Our heavy clay loam is very good for Merlot, like you'll find in Pomerol, on the right bank in Bordeaux,” explains Mike Hengehold. “The fog rolls in here as harvest nears in the fall, and cools the grapes down at night so they have longer hang time to develop fullest flavors.”

Loads of sage aromas with notes of licorice and clove. Easy entry, dried red cherry flavors that lingers into a chewy finish with notes of oak wood espresso and sweet tobacco. Enjoyable nuances for those that enjoy herb and dried fruit qualities.
