  This wine glass HAS to be a joke. You don't smell the aromas from the base of the wine, but rather from that which is running along the inner sides of the glass. Therefore you don't WANT to stick your nose closer to the wine, but rather properly place it (in the appropriately designed glass for the particular varietal) so that you are receiving the essences of the bouquet from the glass.
