Backsberg leads wine industry in combating climate change

Proprietor, Michael Back, who joined the family business in 1976, is passionate about the environment, believing that each generation is the custodian of the land for a limited period of time only.

“Care for the environment means care and concern for succeeding generations. As custodians of the land, it is our duty to understand and recognise potential threats, and to mitigate against them for the benefit of the next generation,” says Back whose forward thinking has already rescued several plant species from extinction by reserving 10% of his land for non-development and preservation of the endangered “Fynbos” biome.

Backsberg has completed a comprehensive carbon audit initiated to understand the carbon emission consequences of its farming and wine making activities. The carbon audit reviewed all activities from overall energy consumption, to CO2 emitted during fermentation. The level of detail considered in the audit allows Backsberg to deliver a range of Carbon Neutral fruit and wine to clients, both domestically and internationally.

The carbon standard applied at Backsberg follows the Kyoto Protocol on Green House Gas emissions. The scientific nature of the carbon audit allows Backsberg to understand the magnitude of the sequestration solutions it needs to seek and develop, in order to reduce its carbon footprint and maintain a status of carbon neutrality going forward.

The sequestration solutions developed by Backsberg will involve a greening program within the nearby village of Klapmuts. This program will be managed by the internationally respected Jeunesse Park, CEO of Food and Trees for Africa, the non-profit national greening organisation driving the Carbon Standard offset program in South Africa. This collaboration will see Backsberg use the Food and Trees for Africa Carbon Standard logo.
“We are indeed proud to be associated with Food and Trees for Africa,” said Back, who believes that a whole new market sector with the emphasis on care, not only for the wine and the consumer, but also care for the environment is about to open.

“Backsberg will now deliver to wine lovers throughout the world, fine wines, individually crafted within our wine making philosophy of producing wines with a high level of “drinkability” which are also Carbon Neutral,” added Back.

"Trees are the most efficient and simple means for us to store carbon, providing us with the air we breathe and absorbing the carbon dioxide we exhale and that is emitted in large quantities by our carbon based society," says Park, who was honoured with an International Chevron Conservation Award in California in October last year for her efforts to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged South Africans through natural resource improvements. Since the start of the Public Benefit Organisation 17 years ago, Food and Trees for Africa has distributed over 2,5 million trees throughout South Africa.

Whilst tree planting is crucial to the absorption of greenhouse gas emissions, it is equally important to develop more conservation oriented practices by becoming more energy efficient for long term sustainability.

Backsberg sees tree planting as part of a package of solutions to climate change and is currently either applying or reviewing a number of these solutions. This “package” includes conversion to bio fuel, setting aside land for development of additional biomass, reviewing packaging (especially in terms of glass weight) and the development of methane digester technology.

Fortunate to have both an environmentalist and a horticulturist in its employ, the Backsberg “Green Team” is helping to create a paradigm shift of care for the environment.

Backsberg Estate, situated along the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains, midway between Paarl and Stellenbosch, has been producing quality wines for over 70 years and enjoys international acclaim as one of the Top 100 Wineries in the world as rated by Wine & Spirits Magazine in New York.

Backsberg offers a wide range of fine wines enjoyed throughout the world, not just for their structure and finesse, but for their seamless “drinkability”. Backsberg is open seven days a week for wine tasting, sales and lunches.
Industry Veteran Roy Cecchetti Launches Cecchetti Wine Company
Wine Company Introducing New 39 Degrees & Redtree Brands across America with Focus on Lake County AVA Sauvignon Blanc and Petite Sirah

SONOMA, Calif.--Wine industry veteran Roy Cecchetti today announced the launch of his new wine venture, called Cecchetti Wine Company. The new company offers two innovative wine brands, 39 Degrees and Redtree – both of which provide approachable wines of great value to wine-loving consumers. Cecchetti Wine Company will introduce these wines in April. www.cecchettiwineco.com

Cecchetti Wine Company offers consumers affordably-priced wines that consistently deliver quality. Redtree and 39 Degrees will both focus on Sauvignon Blanc and Petite Sirah. Redtree will offer these varietals with a California designation, while 39 Degrees will offer wines sourced from the Lake County, AVA. Cecchetti Wine Company believes there is strong demand in the market for more affordably priced wines from Lake County and 39 Degrees was launched to fill this need. Lake County is currently on the rise for producing superb wines, including the appellation’s benchmark Sauvignon Blanc that boasts refreshing and crisp characteristics. The region is also gaining a strong reputation for producing standout reds, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah.

Previously, Roy Cecchetti co-founded Cecchetti Sebastiani Cellar with his brother-in-law, Don Sebastiani. The company became one of the fastest growing California wineries, due largely to the success of their flagship brand Pepperwood Grove. This wine quickly gained a reputation as one of the top wine values in the marketplace and helped the company earn a spot on Inc. Magazine’s 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies in America three years in a row. After selling his stake in the company to Don Sebastiani in 2003, Roy took a break.

“After several years away from the wine industry, I got the urge to create another wine company that stands for quality and value,” says Roy Cecchetti, founder and CEO of Cecchetti Wine Company. “I find it very rewarding to build new wine brands and watch them evolve from concept, to the bottle, and eventually to store shelves,” he added.

To ensure quality in the bottle, Roy recruited winemaker Bob Broman, a trusted colleague who managed winemaking duties for him at Cecchetti Sebastiani Cellar and the Pepperwood Grove brand. Bob has more than three decades of experience producing premium and super premium wines. He was a driving force behind Pepperwood Grove’s numerous “Best Buy” accolades from wine consumer magazines and medals from competitions, including winning “Best Red Wine of the Year” at the 1999 International Wine Challenge in London.

“When Roy asked me to join Cecchetti Wine Company, I jumped at the opportunity to work with him again,” says winemaker Bob Broman. “We are committed to producing stylistic wines from California and especially Lake County that offer fresh, fruit forward flavors that are varietally accurate,” he added.

Cecchetti Wine Company offers two brands:

39 Degrees – offers consumers a selection of good value wines from the Lake County American Viticultural Area, an emerging wine region in California located north of Napa Valley. 39 Degrees refers to the latitude of Lake County, and also where many of the great wine growing countries of the world are located. These wines are versatile and sophisticated, providing a wonderful complement to a variety of foods. The brand will offer Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with suggested retail prices of $15.99 for red varietals, and $9.99 for the Sauvignon Blanc.

RedTree - offers consumers fresh, fruit forward, distinctive varietals of consistent quality and exceptional value that are ready for immediate consumption. These wines are ideal as an aperitif and complement everyday meals. The brand will offer California appellation Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio with a suggested retail price of $9.99 for all varietals.

“We feel the time is ripe in the market for delicious wines that consumers can enjoy any day of the week without breaking the bank,” says Roy Cecchetti. “At the end of the day, our mission is to offer consumers opportunities to confidently experiment with different varietals from California and the Lake County, AVA.”

In fact, these wines have already garnered excitement and momentum even before hitting store shelves by winning medals at several wine competitions, including two silver medals at the Hilton Head 2007 Winefest for 39 Degrees 2006 Sauvignon Blanc and Redtree 2005 Petite Sirah.
From Screw Caps on Wine to All Things Australian, Consumer Survey Reveals Emerging Preferences and Surprising Misconceptions
Commissioned by McWilliam’s Wine, Year-to-Year Survey Results Support Wine’s Growing Acceptance among U.S. Consumers

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--While some say Shiraz and some say Syrah, most consumers – a whopping 83 percent in fact – either have no idea or are incorrect about the fact that the two are made from the same grape, just grown in different regions. And, in addition to interesting perceptions about “Down Under” in general and wine preferences in particular, results from a recently completed 600-respondent survey(1) support the trend toward a growing acceptance of wine among U.S. consumers.

In fact, an impressive 74 percent of 2007 survey respondents report they drink wine on an occasional or frequent basis as compared to 60 percent reported doing so in a similar survey conducted just last year. Moreover, a significant number of survey respondents said they are choosing wine over beer more often as compared to one year ago (65 percent in 2007 vs. 52 percent in 2006).

And, when it comes to the emerging trend toward screw caps on quality bottles of wine, the majority of those surveyed (52 percent) reported they are somewhat or very comfortable with the practice and 17 percent are still undecided or uncertain. But, when it comes to the common practice of blending wine to create the best bottle of wine possible, U.S. consumers are not quite as savvy given the majority of respondents (57 percent) do not realize that most wines, regardless of their origins, are actually made from a blend of grapes or those grown from different regions.

Based on the survey results, consumers are interested in Australia, but, similar to results from last year, they are not necessarily aware of the country’s winemaking expertise.

A few Aussie-related highlights include the following:

         While a solid 72 percent of respondents first think of kangaroos or          The Outback when asked about Australia, only 11 percent think of winemaking          expertise;

         Australia is the top dream destination for the largest group of          U.S. survey respondents (47 percent) followed by Italy (30 percent),          Ireland (12 percent), Greece (7 percent) and Japan (5 percent);

An impressive 87 percent of those surveyed are interested in trying wine produced “Down Under” followed by trying wine from Chile (74 percent), Italy (73 percent), France (71 percent), and Spain (69 percent)(2).

It is also interesting to note differences in consumer habits and perceptions among frequent wine drinkers as compared to respondents who report they seldom drink wine. For instance, a few noteworthy differences are outlined below:

         Nearly all (97 percent) of those who frequently drink wine report that          wine plays a key role in special moments and celebrations with          friends and family which does not necessarily hold true for those who          seldom drink wine (28 percent);

         Fifty-five percent of survey respondents who report they drink wine          frequently would consider using a quality wine for marinating food          for grilling while 82 percent of seldom wine drinkers report not          being open to the culinary concept;

A full 82 percent of respondents who drink wine frequently report they would be more likely to purchase a wine if they knew it was hand-crafted from a family-owned winery with a long history of winemaking whereas only 33 percent of respondents who seldom drink wine would do so.

With a dedicated history of creating top quality wine in Australia, the six-generation family of expert winemakers that craft McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate® wine continues their quest to tap into consumer preferences and raise awareness for high quality Australian wine among U.S. consumers.

       About McWilliam’s Wines

Founded in 1877, McWilliam’s Wines is one of Australia’s oldest and most highly respected family-owned wineries.
Wineries Learn to Think Inside the Box

Composer-turned-writer Steph Waller considers herself something of a wine connoisseur.

But she isn't seduced by the sweet smell of cork or the curve of a narrow glass neck. Instead, the California native swoons over a glass poured straight from the box.

Waller is one of a growing group of wine drinkers turning to the box rather than the bottle. With better wine varieties now available in boxes, wineries are attempting to give the category a new identity far from the rowdy boating trips and drunken fraternity parties that gave box vino its cheap, low-quality image.

The effort seems to be slowly paying off. Box wine is now the fastest growing wine category. According to data from AC Nielsen, three liter box wine volume grew 44 percent in the past year, compared to a three percent gain in overall table wine volume.

"It's gaining tremendous acceptance by the consumer," said Ben Dollard, president of Pacific Wine Partners, a division of Constellation Brands. "It's just the tip of the iceberg."

Vintners have been doing a good deal of experimenting in the last few years. Wine now even comes in plastic bottles and cans. Although wine has been packaged in a box for some time, the new boxes aren't like the five-liter jugs of sweet, headache-inducing wines of the past. Although those are still readily available, there are now premium varieties on the market which show a bit more complexity with hints of berry, apple or oak.

Of course, the premium entries are more expensive. For example, a Chardonnay can run $20 for a box that contains the equivalent of four bottles whereas the lower quality five-liter boxes sell for between $6 and $10 for more than 6 bottles of wine. The premium boxes are still a steal, however, since one quality bottle can run anywhere from $10 to $30 or more.

Box wine manufacturers can afford to charge less for quality since the packaging materials are far less expensive. Morningstar analyst Matt Reilly said, for example, that bottling a $4 or $5 bottle of wine can cost $1 whereas a box can cost a tenth of that.

And of course, you can't beat the convenience. You can take a box of wine just about anywhere or you can leave it at home and not worry that it will go bad. Box wines typically stay fresh for as long as four weeks after they're opened because the boxes contain a vacuum-sealed bag that prevents the wine from being exposed to air.

"A box just kind of sits in the fridge and I don't have to think about it," said Waller, who is also writing a book called "Box of Wine: A Cultural Icon."

Despite the advantages, Wall Street analysts and wine industry experts say it could still take some time before Wine Spectator-reading enthusiasts — and the grocery stores and wine shops that cater to them — can fully embrace the box.

"People are pretty nervous with taking that leap," said Barbara Insel, managing director and wine researcher at MKF Research. "People need to feel comfortable that their friends won't make fun of them."

For now, the new wines are attracting drinkers content with a glass a night at a value price. These drinkers may have outgrown the wine cooler college days, but are still less sophisticated than the tasting room aficionados.

According to a 2005 Constellation Brands consumer study called Project Genome, wine drinkers can be sifted into six different categories based on their preferences and attitudes about wine. Leslie Joseph, vice president of consumer research at Constellation Brands, said the research found that three-liter buyers mainly fit into the "image-seeker" category populated with younger males eager to be seen as trendy and hip.

"They're the people with the newest toys," Joseph said. And "they like to educate their friends."

The age range of the average box wine drinker has been changing, though, Insel said.

Most people assumed the new wine was mainly for the millennials — or those drinkers who turned 21 after 2000 — who were "looking for a cool new unpretentious way to drink wine", Insel said, "but baby boomers are buying it now."

The road to becoming an acceptable bottle alternative to both the younger and the older generations has taken years. To attract them, Dollard's brands — which include Black Box, Blackstone Winery and Hardy's — focused first on how to bring elegance to the box.

Dollard said he highlighted which region the wine was from, traveled to tastings around the country and started selling the product at smaller retailers to build word-of-mouth praise. Ryan Sproule, the founder of Black Box, said he specifically designed the box to appeal to well-heeled consumers. He said he chose a square, cube shape with a black background and printed a wine label directly onto the box.

"You had some familiar wine things there," Sproule said. "The only reason no one had ever had done it in the U.S. was strictly the stigma of the package."

Although the wines can now be found in major retailers like Safeway, Wal-Mart, Kroger and Albertson's, many stores stock it in the same section as the lower-priced and lower-quality box wines of yesterday.

"That is the biggest problem we have," said Sproule. "It's a problem we don't necessarily have the best answer to."

To attract consumers willing to spend upwards of $15 on wine, premium box wines would ideally be shelved right next to their bottle counterparts.

"You see that a lot of times with new categories when you try to rebrand something," said Reilly.

Wine companies must invest in marketing campaigns to change perceptions of both stores and consumers, he said.

"There certainly is an educational aspect to it as well," Reilly said.

Reilly likened the emergence of the box to that of the screw cap, which finally has become more acceptable as an alternative to the cork.

"You will get consumers to accept it over the long run," he said. But in an industry where image is everything, "that takes time."

Even Waller, known among friends as the "Box Master" for her habit of bringing a box of wine to every party, isn't fully sold.

"If I'm going to spend $25 for a wine, I'm going to get a bottle," she said.

Posted by Lauren Sheperd with Associated Press

Comments: (post your comment)

An Austrian Red Wine Receives World Class Score in American Wine Publication for the First Time
For the first time, a red wine from Austria has received a score that puts it on par with the best red wines in the world. This is an achievement that proves the distance Austrian red wines have come in recent years.

The "Moric" wine from Austria has received 94 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. This is the highest score ever achieved by a red wine from Austria in a major American wine publication.

David Schildknecht, the Austrian wine reviewer for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, writes of winemaker Roland Velich and the Moric: "His are wines in a style you will not encounter anywhere else in Austria: Blaufrankisch vinified as if it were Grand Cru Burgundy."

Austria has long been ranked amongst the best regions in the world for their white and dessert wines, regularly scoring points up to 100. Austrian red wines had only earned scores in the 80's, with a few in the low 90's, from publications such as the Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, and Wine Enthusiast. However, the quality of these wines has been improving dramatically over the past decade. There is a "nature vs. nurture" debate going on as to whether this improvement is due to greater red winemaking skills, or if global warming is playing a part.

"Greatness in wine is never in the obvious, never in the superficial, never on the surface. Greatness in wine is in the nuances, it is hidden in the depth of a wine and will come forward and show itself only to the patient those willing to spend the extra time and effort." Roland Velich of Moric explains.

The vines used to produce the Moric wines are between 40 to 110 years old. Production of the top two Moric wines, the Alte Reben ("old vines") Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt, is extremely limited and as such is exclusively available from a single U.S. importer: Winemonger LLC, based in Los Angeles.

The importer has made it available direct to the consumer via their retail website: www.Winemonger.com. Winemonger.com can legally ship wine to consumers in 27 states, taking advantage of the recent Supreme Court ruling.

For additional information about the Moric wines and winery, including trade tasting samples and photographs for press, contact Emily Weissman at 323.666.5566 or email.

About Winemonger
Winemonger is a boutique wine import and retail company based in Los Angeles, California. It imports and sells special wines that are an expression of their region: world class wines that reflect terroir, tradition and the winemaker's personal philosophy. Winemonger currently offers a unique catalog of Austrian wines, with more varietals and regions to come.

For more information, go to www.winemonger.com.

Posted by with Winemonger

Comments: (post your comment)

Childress Vineyards Releases First Sparkling Wine and Holiday Gift Wines for Race Fans and Timberlake Followers
This week, the winery will release its first sparkling wine called Victory Cuvée. The long-anticipated bubbly from Childress Vineyards is a Blanc de Blancs Brut NV (non-vintage) made in the traditional Méthode Champenoise.

LEXINGTON , NC – The holiday season provides ample time to relax with family and friends and Childress Vineyards is introducing a diverse array of wines that are ideal to share at both grand occasions and casual get-togethers.

This week, the winery will release its first sparkling wine called Victory Cuvée. The long-anticipated bubbly from Childress Vineyards is a Blanc de Blancs Brut NV (non-vintage) made in the traditional Méthode Champenoise. It is rich with Bartlett pear and Granny Smith apple flavors and has a creamy, elegant texture for pairing with food.

Adorned with embossed silver metal labels, Victory Cuvée sports a toast from NASCAR team owner Richard Childress "to all your winning moments in life!" It will retail for $24.99.

With the release of Victory Cuvée, Childress becomes one of only two wineries in North Carolina to offer a sparkling wine. Its timing is not only perfect for the busy holiday party season but also in commemoration of the victorious rebound of RCR Racing’s (Richard Childress Racing) NASCAR teams this past season. Two of RCR Racing’s teams finished in the top 10 in the Nextel NASCAR Cup chase this year and another captured the Busch Series Championship this season.

To honor driver Kevin Harvick, the winner of the Busch Series Championship, Childress Vineyards will introduce a Meritage Red Table Wine with a label that resembles the hood of the 21 car that Harvick drove to victory in that series. The orange and blue label also has Harvick’s stylized signature on the front and a list of all the races he won during the year on the back. It will retail for $29.

World renowned artist Bob Timberlake has teamed with Childress Vineyards to develop a special holiday Chardonnay.

Called "Christmas Cardinal," the 2005 vintage Chardonnay features a label with a colorful red cardinal in a holly bush from Timberlake’s original painting, entitled, "Christmas Cardinal."

The buttery, oak-kissed Chardonnay is loaded with tropical fruit. It will retail for $19.99. This marks the second time Timberlake and Childress Vineyards have collaborated on special wines in 2006. "Fine Swine Wine" was the other popular offering from the two that was released at the Barbecue Festival of Lexington and sold out within hours.

For the finale to any holiday gathering, Childress Vineyards has "Snow Cap," a sweet white wine in a petite 375 millimeter bottle. An avid outdoorsman, Richard Childress designed the label himself to resemble snow capped mountains he frequents on hunting trips. The bottle is capped with a hand-dipped, white waxed top.

All of the wines from Childress Vineyards were crafted by award-winning winemaker Mark Friszolowski. They can be purchased at the winery and online at www.childressvineyards.com. Fast Track Wine Club Members will receive a discount on purchases for 20%. Cases discounts are available for both the wine club and the general public.

Posted by with Director of Marketing and PR

Comments: (post your comment)

Wine buyers are flooded with thousands of choices and little or no time to research those choices. Ken's Holiday Wine List lets people select highly rated wines at different price levels without having to worry about bias from wine sellers. Novices and enthusiasts alike will find excellent wines at value prices with a quick and easy wine shopping list.

"81% of our subscribers usually buy wine priced between $11 and $25 but at the holidays they will spend two or three times that amount when buying wine as a gift. Ken suggests the 2005 George Duboeuf "Fleurie - Domaine des Quatre Vents" ($16) with ham; the 2005 Chehalem Pinot Gris ($19) with turkey; and the 2003 Paul Jaboulet Aîné "Thalabert" ($33), with prime rib. For that special gift wine, when you really want to impress a friend, "consider the 2003 Château Pontet-Canet from Bordeaux ($90) as an excellent choice," says Ken.

"Going back and forth between Web sites to try and search out where and what the good wines are can be a long and frustrating process, " states Alex DeWinter, Wine Director at Grill 23 & Bar in Boston. "There is one Web site, however, which manages to simplify the selection process without oversimplifying the information: KensWineGuide.com."

Ken Hoggins began publishing holiday wine recommendations in 1999 and is a trusted resource for consumers and wine connoisseurs. Ken consolidates wine ratings from all the major wine trade magazines, narrowing the list to ensure superb results quickly and easily. Ken and his tasting panel also review wines and add their scores to the overall average rating.
Famous New York Wine Educator Says the New 'Wine Diet' Adds Holiday Cheer and Years to Your Life
A bottle of red wine and a new book on wine might be what the doctor orders for you this Holiday season. More and more studies are showing that you should not stop having wine at dinner when dieting, because there are too many significant long-term health benefits and they outweigh the mere calorie intake. In fact, wine might even be considered the new health drink.

New York, NY -- Stop Your Worrying -- Enjoying a glass of red wine might be the perfect way to better health during the temptations of holiday dining.

"Red wine is good and it's good for you, in fact, it might even be considered the new health drink," says New York City resident Christine Ansbacher, a Certified Wine Educator known as The Wine Diva and author of Secrets from The Wine Diva: Tips on Buying, Ordering & Enjoying Wine.

Ansbacher says, "While many are nervous over expanding waistlines from Holiday goodies, wine lovers are sitting back and relaxing with their favorite glass of red wine."

There's mounting evidence that shedding a few pounds and drinking red wine go together. Roger Corder's celebrated new book "The Wine Diet" extols the virtue of red wines and dark chocolate. Really, who would want to cheat on that diet?

Ansbacher also says, "If you're contemplating giving up wine for your diet...Don't! There are far too many studies now showing the significant long-term health benefits from a daily glass or two of red wine to worry about the extra calories."

Top U.S. killers are heart disease and cancer, but it doesn't have to be that way. One study shows men can lower their risk of heart disease by 50% by drinking two glasses of red wine per day. And women who drink one glass per day reduce their risk by 30%.

What makes red wine so healthy? Red grape skins, seeds and stems all contain high concentrations of compounds called polyphenols - more commonly known as antioxidants. These same antioxidants also help prevent certain types of cancer such as prostate, colon, and skin cancer.

Do you think high blood pressure is at epidemic levels? Perhaps it's because not enough Americans have wine savvy. Wine lovers now realize a glass of wine also helps your body excrete excess sodium, which lowers your blood pressure.

And now you can stop worrying about growing old. Red wine also has resveratrol, which was most recently linked by two studies in mice, to living longer and to showing signs of reducing the leading factors that cause Alzheimer's disease. It might be too soon to predict if the results in mice will be duplicated in humans, but it's a promising step.

Before you say, 'Lets drink to a better future,' remember that true wine educators like Ansbacher and Corder are against heavy drinking. Rather they say people should be more selective about the alcohol they drink.

Ansbacher purposefully shares her instant wine savvy so that people don't have to be intimidated when ordering wine at restaurants. Two of her favorite delights are removing the mystery from pronouncing and remember foreign wine names and showing wine lovers how to taste their way to an affordable wine cellar.

Wouldn't a bottle of red wine and a couple of great books about wine be the perfect Holiday gift this season?

and you can claim yours at For a limited time, Ansbacher is offering special "Instant Wine Savvy" audios as Holiday Gifts with the purchase of her book Secrets from The Wine Diva http://InstantWineSavvy.com

Posted by with

Comments: (post your comment)

A Toast to Red Wine and Balsamic Vinegars: Fountain of Youth in a Bottle?
Researchers at Harvard University and the National Institute on Aging discovered that resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red wine, may boost longevity. Cal Orey's "The Healing Powers of Vinegar: A Complete Guide to Nature's Most Remarkable Remedy: Revised and Updated" touts reservatrol-rich red wine and balsamic vinegars as the liquid to youth.

Lake Tahoe, CA -- According to a recent article in The New York Times, the antioxidant resveratrol, found in red wine inhibits the "bad effects" of a high calorie diet in mice and adds years to their lifespan. If people add vinegars rich in resveratrol to their diets can it stall Father Time?

Author Cal Orey seems to think so. Resveratol-rich red wine and balsamic vinegars may be new antiaging key for baby boomer and seniors, Orey said. Her revised and updated book, "The Healing Powers of Vinegar: A Complete Guide to Nature's Mot Remarkable Remedy," shows that the while popular apple cider vinegar, high in potassium boosts health (it can help detoxify the body, balance sodium and potassium levels to help make losing those extra pounds easier), it's the Mediterranean-type red wine and balsamic vinegars, that may help fight obesity which is often linked to heart disease.

"They're both derived from grapes," Orey said. "And like red wine, they contain disease-fighting antioxidants such as quercetin and resveratrol." While studies have shown drinking a glass of red wine daily cut your heart disease risk, "these vinegars can give you all the health benefits of wine, without the alcohol," Orey said. She added, "Teaming these two vinegars with other Mediterranean-type foods high in resveratrol, such as blueberries and peanuts, may help people around the globe to lose body fat, and stall age-related diseases."

According to Orey, a fruit-flavored vinegar craze in Asia is also newsworthy. A new trend in Japan is to consume vinegar drinks, in particular those made from fruit. A Korean delight, persimmon vinegar, an excellent source of youth-boosting vitamins A and C, may also be beneficial to turn back the clock.

"These other vinegars are drawing attention worldwide, especially paired with nutrient-rich antioxidant rich "superfoods" that contain disease-fighting compounds, like resveratrol, so people can stall aging, and live a longer, healthier life," Orey said.

About the Author
Cal Orey is an accomplished author and journalist.
Holiday and Everyday Wine & Dine Gifts Everyone Will Appreciate

SONOMA -- Etiquette experts all agree that it is never proper to walk into a dinner party without a gift for the host. According to Viansa Winery CEO and winery expert Jake Shapiro, wine is the perfect gift.

But since most of us are far from calling ourselves wine connoisseurs, Shapiro shares holiday gift concepts that he believes will help take the angst out of gifting others surely set your gifts apart by adding flair.

Make a Match: "Try to match your choice of wine to personality. For the Italian food lover, you can choose from an assortment of fine Italian varietals such as Nebbiolo, Dolcetto or Freisa, or California varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot," says Shapiro.

Dress it Up! "Just like you would dress up with your finest clothes for an event, the same should apply to a fine bottle of wine," says Shapiro. Most major wine retailers now carry drip stoppers, decorative corks, and wine charms. "If you have time before an event, you may want to consider wrapping your wine in a fine bath linen, tablecloth or vintage material, and tie with a satin ribbon."

Food and Wine: According to Shapiro, gift baskets are ideal because they provide an instant indulgence of both wine and food, they also give your host a "taste of luxury" items that perhaps they may not treat themselves to on a regular basis. "Adding gourmet food items to your gift like pesto sauces, estate olive oils, vinegars, herbs, seasonings, salami, cheese, chocolate and dessert sauces will give your gift of wine a flavorful added dimension," says Shapiro.

The gift of wine over time: The chance of you having a passionate wine lover on your holiday gift list is quite likely, with American wine consumption rapidly growing. In fact, the US will eventually surpass Italy as the world's 2nd-largest wine market. "For the ultra-connoisseur who appreciates wine year-round, consider a membership to a wine club, which will give your host a special gift month after month. As an added bonus, some clubs offer discounts and other "VIP" extras with the membership," says Shapiro.
Winderlea Wine Company, LLC Purchases Famed Goldschmidt Vineyard

DUNDEE, Ore. -- Winderlea Wine Company, LLC, a boutique winery specializing in the limited production of Pinot Noir from Oregon, announced today the purchase of the renowned Goldschmidt Vineyard in the heart of the Red Hills of Dundee. The purchase includes 20 acres on the Red Hills Bench, the area in which Oregon's international recognition for great Pinot Noir began.

The vineyard, located on the south side of Worden Hill Road, was planted in 1974 and boasts some of the oldest vines in the Willamette Valley. With ideal elevations of 480 to 570 feet, the property's original plantings include Pommard, Wadenswil and the so-called Coury Clone. More recently complemented by the addition of densely planted Dijon clones, today the site is composed of 13 blocks entirely devoted to Pinot Noir.

According to Winderlea Wine Company co-founders Donna Morris and Bill Sweat, the Goldschmidt Vineyard is the ideal property from which to launch their winery. "Early on we were drawn to the volcanic, clay loam Jory soils of the Red Hills of Dundee for the wines they produced," said Ms. Morris. "We're excited about the possibilities our vineyard holds for luxury wines." Co-founder Bill Sweat added, "We have spent the past 14 months walking thousands of acres of vineyards and tasting hundreds of wines from those vineyards to find the site we believe will produce the elegant, sensuous and balanced wines we want to create."

Most recently, the fruit from Goldschmidt has been sold to an exclusive group of winemakers in Oregon. Penner-Ash Wine Cellars, Patricia Green Cellars, Adelsheim Vineyard and R. Stuart & Co. have reserved the fruit to create single-vineyard designates for which each has earned critical recognition.

About Winderlea
Winderlea Wine Company, LLC was founded in 2005 by former Bostonians Donna Morris and Bill Sweat as an outgrowth of their passion for great Pinot Noir. The 2006 inaugural vintage is expected to be released in the first half of 2008 and consists of two planned single-vineyard designates including Goldschmidt and adjacent Dundee Hills vineyard ANA. Acclaimed winemaker Robert Brittan, formerly of Stags' Leap Winery, will make Winderlea wines.

Winderlea will make its wines available to the public through a new tasting room that will be built on the vineyard site on Worden Hill Road. The tasting room is planned to open over Memorial Day weekend 2008. In addition Winderlea will make its wines available through a limited number of fine wine stores and restaurants as well as its website http://www.winderlea.com.

Posted by with

Comments: (post your comment)

Historic Changes Set for Wine Distribution
Inertia Beverage Group To Deploy Internet Ordering System Allowing Direct Winery-to-Restaurant Sales Between California and New York

Napa, Calif—New groundbreaking technology developed by Inertia Beverage Group (http://www.inertiabev.com) of Napa, California will allow New York restaurants and retailers to place orders for artisan wines on winery websites and have it delivered across state lines through the three tier system. The new proprietary technology, deemed by the New York State Liquor Authority not to conflict with the state’s ABC laws, will fundamentally change the way out-of-state wineries access the New York State market.

Presented under Inertia’s patent pending “Rethink Wine Trade” Initiative the new technology allows restaurants and retailers to go directly to the winery website to order wines in amounts as small as six bottles. The new technology facilitates a transaction involving the winery, restaurant and a wholesaler, all of which is accomplished electronically and instantly. The new system is a paradigm shift in wine distribution that will benefit producers, regulators, restaurants and wholesalers:

-Wineries benefit by gaining access to restaurants and retailers where they don’t already have distribution

-Wholesalers benefit by making product available to their retail client base without an advance investment in expensive wine inventory

-Retailers and Restaurants benefit by gaining convenient access to wines not normally available in New York

-The New York State Liquor Authority benefits by assuring that the retailers are properly licensed and taxes are paid.

PARADIGM SHIFT IN WINE DISTRIBUTION WITH NEW SYSTEM

“The Rethink Wine Trade technology allows restaurants and retailers to finally engage in Internet-based commerce with the same convenience and directness consumers have embraced,” explained Inertia CEO Paul Mabray. “On the other hand now small, artisan wineries that have often had difficulty finding distributors, will have access to new markets.”

Inertia worked closely with the New York Stale Liquor Authority in developing the Rethink Wine Trade system, ensuring it would not conflict with New York’s alcohol distribution laws. In an advisory opinion sent to Inertia, the NY SLA confirmed that the Rethink Wine Trade System would “be permissible under law” and “licensees using the service would not be subjecting themselves to disciplinary action” provided they otherwise complied with state laws.

“The NY SLA was instrumental in helping us create this new system,” said Mabray. “They understand the necessity of accommodating not just new technologies but new realities of the marketplace where wineries are booming in number and distributor numbers are contracting. “

TRADITIONAL BARRIERS TO DISTRIBUTION AND SALES FALL

Key to the new system is the establishment of “virtual inventory”. When a restaurant or retailer places an order directly on a winery website, the order is immediately routed through a wholesaler who accesses the wine from the “virtual inventory” of the winery and is billed by the winery. The wholesaler pays all taxes on the transaction, bills the restaurant or retailer, and then sends payment to winery. The entire transaction occurs instantly over the Internet. The winery then ships the wine to the retailer or restaurant consistent with three tier system delivery requirements.

“This is groundbreaking technology that removes traditional barriers between wineries, wholesalers, restaurants and retailers,” Mabray said. “By connecting the restaurateur and retailer directly to the winery site through a wholesaler we are building a commercial bridge that provides efficiencies and stronger supply chain relationships. It’s a new world emerging.”

Inertia’s Rethink Wine Trade Initiative launches first in New York and California and plans to follow up in Arizona, Washington, Texas and Florida in Q1-07.

Posted by with Wark Communications

Comments: (post your comment)
